Yellowknife has been good to Romel Silvero since he arrived here in the ‘90s. Back then, Silverio was working three jobs to cover the expenses of a young family in the North, one of those jobs being janitorial work in Stanton Hospital. Fifteen years later, after a lot of hard work, Rommel oversees patient care in that same hospital. In one way or another, he’s always been caring for Yellowknife.
His experiences range from working in kitchens at Diavik and Trapper's Cabin to running a family business, all while studying to become a nurse. Along with his brother, sister, and mother, Rommel now lives with his three young children and wife in Yellowknife. For the whole Silverio family, Yellowknife is—and always will be—home.
As a community-minded person, Rommel was being encouraged in 2012 to run for city council by colleagues, friends and family, but felt like he should be certain he knows his city before representing its constituents.
Today, Rommel is ready. The time is right to roll up his sleeves give back to the city he knows so well, and gave him so much.
